COEUR d'ALENE, ID -- Brookeslee Colvin is a 5'8" Point Guard from Liberty Lake, Washington. She's currently an 8th grader who will be attending Coeur d'Alene High School, and runs with the Northwest Blazers on the Under Armour circuit. Colvin is the younger sister of Tayshawn Colvin and Teagan Colvin, who are both RPN alums.

I took a three month break from basketball work, but picking Colvin as the first spring release was a no brainier. Colvin comes from a basketball family who knows how to establish a winning culture through their character. The 2027 guard is well beyond her years scoring at all three levels, and playing with a pace that you rarely see from middle school talent. I believe that Colvin can be the next best thing to come out of the Pacific Northwest. For now, let's see what the youngest of the trio has to say.

I caught up with the Division 1 recruit on growing up in the Pacific Northwest, UAA circuit, college recruitment and the upcoming summer period.

BROOKESLEE COLVIN INTERVIEW

When did you first start playing basketball?

  • "I first started playing basketball when I was 3. I played on a YMCA rec team until I was in second grade, then started playing AAU with a fourth grade team locally. That’s when I really started to love the game. I would always go to my older siblings games, and seeing them play pushed me to keep going and grow my game."

Describe your game from the skill standpoint?

  • "I would say first I’m a high IQ point guard. I'm a very fiery competitor and leader. I really aspire to be an elite defender, a knock down 3 point shooter and display my court vision. My main focus when playing is to make all of my teammates around me better."

How was life growing up in the Pacific Northwest?

  • "I personally have really loved growing up in the Northwest. I really enjoy spending time on the water, so always living by a lake has been so much fun for me. I like that we always get all four seasons here. School wise I’ve been to four different schools in the PNW (Pacific Northwest), and have had great experiences at all of them."

The move to Coeur d'Alene was pretty recent as you left behind life in Washington. How has your experience been so far in the next state over?

  • "It’s been a pretty smooth transition. Before moving, I knew other students, teammates and coaches. My whole family moved so it hasn’t been that much of a drastic change, and has felt just like normal. I’m so excited for all that this move has blessed me with, and can’t wait to see what else is on the way."

You’ve had an adventurous last 8 months as a middle schooler. From winning a shoe circuit championship at 13 to picking up your first Division 1 offer, your life has changed tremendously. Talk us through it.

  • "I’m so blessed to have been able to receive an offer at such a young age. Additionally, the opportunity to play on the UAA 16u circuit while just being in seventh grade. In the summer, you're playing a lot of games back to back so it’s definitely crazy. Just seeing that coaches are recognizing all that work that I have been putting in is such a great feeling. It also motivates me to keep growing my game and getting better every day."

You’re still at a very early stage of your career. What kinds of things are you doing to make yourself the best player you can be?
  • "I’m young but I’ve been around basketball my whole life. I’ve been in the gym watching and training with my brother and sister probably as soon as I could walk. My dad, Christien trains us to have a well rounded game both physically and mentally. We all do weight training, speed, agility, plyometrics, defensive movements, ball handling and scoring drills."

Who’s your favorite basketball player and why?

  • "My favorite player is Sabrina Ionescu who currently plays in the WNBA for the New York Liberty. What I like most about her game is her skill set. She’s a great defender, rebounder, floor general, passer, shooter and decision maker in pick and rolls. It's why she has the record for most triple doubles in college, and I look up to her."

Who would you say is your role model?

  • "I would definitely say my mom, Aleisha is a huge role model to me. She has always taught me what hard work and servant leadership looks like. I aspire to be as passionate as her in everything I do. I think she is the perfect example of who I want to grow up to be."

You’re at the early stage of recruiting and picking up some steam. As people our thoughts can change over time, but what are some factors you think about when it comes to college recruitment?

  • "What I’m looking for in a school is one that Values academics and athletics. I want to get a degree that will help me have a great life after basketball. I want to be part of a program where the Coaches want and value me not just my ranking. It’s important to find a team that is a Good fit that has the right style of play that will help me grow and highlight my skill set. I know from experience that Visits are important you need to go see campus and feel the vibes around town."

The question we have all been waiting for, who would in a one-on-one out of you and Teagan?

  • "Right now I’m focused on what we are going to accomplish next year on the court together. Not playing against each other."

Editor's note: Brookeslee is better than most because I have seen some of the most insane answers in previous years *laughs*

In all seriousness, what’s next for you Colvin?

  • "Just finishing up this year's school ball season and continuing to grow my game. After that it will be time to prepare for the first stop of the UAA circuit at the Nook (Spooky Nook). Then, I’m super excited to get on the court with my sister during the high school summer basketball period. Finally, it will be time for the last stretch of GUAA with stops in Louisville and Cincinnati. I’m going to do everything I can to help my team win a third straight National Championship!"

Thank you Brookeslee for taking the time to talk with me this evening. Do you have any words of encouragement or motivation for people? Any last words?

  • "I appreciate you and everything you have been doing. As for words of encouragement or motivation, always strive to get 1% better every day. Always believe in yourself even if others don’t believe in you."
