The Ryan Mulroy Interview (Maple Glen, PA)
"I started playing basketball when I was 4 years old. Started travel in third grade, and started to take the game seriously when I got to sixth."
- "I have a high basketball IQ. I'm a three level scorer, always looking to grab rebounds and play defense. I'm good at getting my teammates involved, but most importantly I’ll do what ever it takes to help my team win."
How was life growing up in Southeastern PA?
- "I grew up in one of the western suburbs of Philadelphia in the Upper Dublin School District. We are about 20 minutes outside of Philly. I love rooting for Philly sports teams. Go Birds, Phillies, Sixers and Flyers. I am so lucky in so many ways with where I grew up. I have a very supportive and loving family and love my neighborhood. I can’t imagine growing up anywhere else. We have such a close neighborhood and have even gone on vacations with many of them. We we’re always playing pick-up in the driveway and making wiffleball tournaments in the back yard. I still organize a backyard wiffleball league each year with all of my friends. It’s really cool that now so many family members, and friends get excited to come watch UD basketball. They are lifelong friends for sure. I love seeing them there!"
- "Our team had a very successful regular season. We finished 18-7 overall. It was the most our school had won in 20 years, and we finished second in our conference behind the District 1 6A champs, Plymouth Whitemarsh."
- "Individually I had a very successful sophomore season. I led our team in scoring at 13 points per game. I also led our team in rebounds with 7.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 54% from the field. I was recognized for many awards this year including First team All league from the Suburban One Conference. I was selected as the Great Valley Holiday Tournament MVP, and selected for the All-Tournament team for the annual Jim Church Classic Tournament. I was also recognized by my coaches on multiple occasions as the “unsung hero” of the game. This was an award given after games that we won, and was given to the player recognized for doing 'what you don’t see in the box score'. "
"I literally have a ball in my hand every single day. I love this game. I’ve technically had two weeks off since our high school season ended, and I’m missing the game so much. I can’t wait for AAU to start. In the offseason, I workout every single day. Three of those days are with my coaches, but I do individual work all of the time. I am lifting twice a week. I’m working on being consistent with my shot, and am doing a lot of plyometrics to work on getting bigger, quicker, and stronger."
"I’m extremely fortunate to have 2 really amazing teams that I could play with this year. Both participate in the Hoop Group Select League, which is an extremely competitive circuit. I’ll have a better idea in the next couple weeks where I will end up."
"My favorite player is Michael Jordan. I’m sure a lot of people say him, but I really think his work ethic and his determination to be the absolute best is incredible. I also enjoy watching Cormac Ryan, who is a point guard for Notre Dame. His grit, leadership and style of play is similar to my game."
- "My parents are my biggest role models. I know that no matter what I can do, they will guide me in the right direction. I see how hard they work to provide a good life for me, my sister and brother. I see how they have volunteered their time as coaches, room parents, or prep teachers because they want to stay involved and connected to our life. They have instilled in me the importance of family. They’ve always taught me to work hard and do my very best. They also taught me that no matter what you need to be a good person. You need to treat others the way you want to be treated. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them."
- "When the time comes to start exploring college opportunities, the one thing I want to have is the right fit for me as a student-athlete. This would be quality academics, a competitive basketball program, and coaches that are going to help me continue to grow as a person and a basketball player."
- "As a team, we are looking to be competitive again in our conference and in District 1. Our goal is to continue to work all offseason, and build chemistry with each other. My individual goals are to step up, and be more of a leader on and off the court."
- "Thank you Tyreese for interviewing me. It really means a lot. I would encourage people to believe in themselves. To not let anyone tell you that you can’t do something, or that you're not good enough. If you work hard you can do anything you can put your mind to."
