RECIFE, PERNAMBUCO -- Sofia Dantas (Dan·toss) is a 6-foot Forward from Brazil. She's currently a sophomore at Winston Salem Christian School, and runs with the Lady Phoenix on the AAU circuit. Dantas previously played for Adrianinha Basketball Club, and enrolled into Winston-Salem Christian during the fall 2022 semester.

A prospect who was very high on my watch list throughout the season, Dantas is a prospect to keep an eye on these next two years. But, quite frankly, I believe she's someone that will get better throughout time and sneak up on a college coach's radar.

Standing at 6-feet, she's versatile at her size in being able to score at all three levels, and always makes the right play. The one thing I love about Dantas' game is she plays at a great pace. She's never rattled when facing pressure, knows where to be at in the right moments and is one of the smartest prospects I have seen play basketball. That 4.0 life opens doors for any athlete, but I have enjoyed every bit of her interview process, and even got to learn some Portuguese along the way. I believe that Dantas can become an elite player one day as long as she continues to make the best out of opportunities for herself.

I caught up with the international prospect on growing up in Brazil, life as an international prospect and preparation for junior year.

Before the interview, I want to give a huge shoutout to Sofia for translating her whole interview down for me to learn and for the people in her home country!

Quando você começou a jogar basquete/When did you first start playing basketball?

"Meu irmão era jogador de basquete, e eu sempre acompanhava ele e estava presente nos jogos dele. Eu era uma grande fã dele. Um dia, quando eu estava assistindo ele jogar, a técnica dele me chamou para treinar no time feminino dela. Depois desse dia, eu nunca parei de jogar."

"My brother was a basketball player, and I was always watching his games. I was a huge fan of my brother. One day his coach invited me to practice with her in her girls team. Since that day, I never stopped playing."

Como você descreveria suas habilidades de jogo/Describe your game from the skill standpoint.

"Eu jogo como Ala-pivô, sempre ajudando as armadoras com bons bloqueios e fazendo as bandejas mas eu também posso chutar de longe mesmo jogando de ala-pivô. Eu tenho uma boa defesa em pivôs grandes e sou uma boa ajuda na defesa."

"I'm a 4 and 3. I'm always helping the guards by setting good screens and making the lay ups, but I can also shoot the ball as well. I have a good defense in the post, and I am good off-the-ball."

Como foi a sua vida crescendo no Brasil/How was life growing up in Brazil?

"Crescer no Brasil foi maravilhoso! Eu amo estar em volta da minha família, e eu tive uma infância incrível no Brasil. Depois que eu me mudei para os EUA, eu percebi o quanto eu amo minha país e cidade e o quanto eu amo estar perto das pessoas que eu cresci em volta. Nós temos muitas tradições e coisas que eu nunca vou esquecer ou abrir mão. O basquete na minha cidade não é forte, então para seguir o meu sonho eu tive que sair do Brazil mesmo que eu fosse muito apegada a minha família. Eu não me arrependo da minha decisão. Eu era muito apegada a minha família e amigos, e por essa razão foi uma decisão muito difícil de se fazer. Eu estava insegura sobre a ideia de deixar o Brasil e deixar minha família para trás mas eu sabia que era o certo a se fazer, e era oque eu queria."

"Growing up in Brazil was absolutely amazing! I love being around my family, and I had an incredible childhood here. After I went to live in the U.S, I realized how I love my hometown and love the people I used to live with. We have a lot of traditions and things that I will never forget. Basketball in my hometown, it’s not very strong. I had to leave Brazil to follow my dream even though i’m very attached to my family. I don’t regret it."

Se transferir para um novo país vem com muitas coisas para pensar sobre. Com oportunidades, deixar a família e descobrir uma nova vida. Como você descobriu WSCS e como foi o processo por trás disso/Transferring to a new country comes with many different things to think about. With opportunities, leaving family and discovering new life. How did you discover WSCS and how was the process behind it?

"Eu era muito apegado à minha família e amigos, e por isso foi uma decisão muito difícil de tomar. Eu estava inseguro com a ideia de deixar o Brasil e minha família para trás, mas sabia que era o certo a fazer. Isso é o que eu queria. Minha última treinadora brasileira estava saindo do Brasil para treinar em outro país e ela disse que não queria me 'deixar' no Brasil. Então ela arranjou um agente para me ajudar a encontrar uma escola e foi assim que encontramos a WSCS, eles me aceitaram e chegaram lá em Agosto de 2022. Tudo aconteceu em menos de 2 meses, foi um processo rápido."

"I was very attached to my family and friends, and for that reason it was a very hard decision to make. I was insecure about the idea of leaving Brazil and my family behind, but I knew that it was the right to do. That’s what i wanted. My last Brazilian coach was leaving Brazil to coach in another Country and she said that she didn’t want to “leave” me in Brazil. So then she found an agent to help me finding a school and that’s how we found WSCS, they accepted me, and arrived there in august of 2022. Everything happened in less than 2 months, it was a fast process."

Como é a sua rotina de um dia normal em Winston Salem Christian/How’s your typical day at Winston Salem Christian?

"Eu acordo todos os dias às 7 da manhã para me arrumar para a escola. Então eu tomo café da manhã por volta das 7:30. Depois a dona da nossa casa nos leva para o colégio as 7:45, e a nossa primeira aula começa as 8:05h e a última classe acaba as 15:15. Nós temos 8 períodos de aula no colégio. Minha agenda acadêmica não, é muito pesada mas às vezes meus professores pesam bastante nas atividades."

"I wake up every day at 7 a.m. to get ready for school. Then, I eat breakfast around 7:30 a.m. My houseparent drive us to school every day at 7:45, and we have the first class, which is P.E at 8:05 and my last class ends at 3:15 pm. We have 8 periods of classes at school. My academic schedule it’s not very hard but sometimes my teachers give me a lot of activities."

Como foi a sua temporada como uma Sophomore/How was your sophomore season?

"No início da temporada eu estava frustrado. Não conhecia meus companheiros, não estava confiante e confortável com meu jogo individual. Depois de um tempo, no meio da temporada eu estava mais confiante e já havia encontrado meu lugar na equipe. Foi minha primeira temporada jogando nos Estados Unidos e estou ansioso pela próxima temporada. Nosso time era muito bom. Na minha situação eu estava com medo porque não os conhecia, mas eles foram muito receptivos e gentis comigo. Estou feliz por conhecê-los e definitivamente fizemos um trabalho incrível juntos nesta temporada."

"At the beginning of the season, I was frustrated. I didn't know my teammates, I wasn't confident and comfortable with my individual game. After a while, in the middle of the season I was more confident and had already found my place in the team. It was my first season playing in the US and I'm looking forward to next season. Our team was really good. At first I was scared because I didn't know them, but they were very welcoming and kind to me. I'm happy to meet them and we've definitely done an amazing job together this season."

Desde que você está nos EUA, quais são alguns takeaways da sua experiência até agora/Since you’ve been in the States, what are some takeaways from your experience so far?

"É uma realidade completamente diferente! Tem algumas coisas que eu tive que me acostumar a fazer quando eu comecei a morar nos Estados Unidos. A cultura de comer muito fast food é diferente para mim, ou o tipo de comida que eles consumem como lanches ou refeições. No Brasil é totalmente diferente, por isso no início eu estava tendo problemas com a minha alimentação. A escola também é diferente. Nos EUA os alunos participam da escolha da agenda escolar, os estudantes não precisam ter todas as classes difíceis no mesmo ano, e eles ajudam muito os atletas. No Brasil nós temos todas as classes difíceis e fáceis todos os dias até o ano da sua graduação. O basquete nos EUA é um sonho.Todos os ginásios grandes, torneios, campeonatos, estruturas e organização para todas as atletas é incrível e que infelizmente no Brasil, não é tão organizado e valorizado. Morar nos Estados Unidos me trouxe muitas coisas boas e experiências legais. Eu conheci um grupo muito especial de pessoas."

"It's a completely different reality! There are some things I had to get used to doing when I started living in the US. The culture of eating a lot of fast food is different for me, or the type of food they consume as snacks or meals. In Brazil it's totally different, so at the beginning I was having problems with my diet. The school is also different. In the US students participate in choosing the school schedule, students don't have to take all the difficult classes in the same year, and they help athletes a lot. In Brazil we have all the hard and easy classes every day until your graduation year. Basketball in the USA is a dream. All the big gyms, tournaments, championships, structures and organization for all the athletes is incredible and unfortunately in Brazil, it is not so organized and valued. Living in the United States has brought me many good things and cool experiences. I met a very special group of people in the US."

Quem é o seu jogador preferido e porque/Who’s your favorite basketball player and why?

"Eu diria Devin Booker porque gosto do jogo dele. Acho que ele é um grande jogador e tem um jogo inteligente. Ele tem uma ótima defesa e pode jogar em diferentes posições."

"I would say Devin Booker as I like his game. I think he's a great player and has a smart game. He has great defense and can play in different positions."

Quem você consideraria como seus exemplos/Who are your role models?

"Magic Paula, Hortência e Adriana Mafra, ou a quem chamo de 'Adrianinha'. Eles foram atletas maravilhosos e se tornaram muito importantes para o basquete brasileiro. Eles são definitivamente pessoas que eu admiro. Também tive a chance de ter a Adrianinha como treinadora da minha equipe no Brasil. Foram e são mulheres com muito poder e influência no basquete brasileiro."

"Magic Paula, Hortência and Adriana Mafra, or who I call 'Adrianinha'. They were wonderful athletes, and became very important for Brazilian basketball. They are definitely people I look up to. I also had the chance to have Adrianinha coach my team in Brazil. They were and are women with a lot of power and influence in Brazilian basketball."

Você está na idade de procurar por oportunidades em college, oque você procura em um college/As you’re now at the age where you’re starting to look for college opportunities, what do you ideally look for in a college?

"Estou procurando uma faculdade academicamente boa. Um bom grupo de atletas e treinadores com uma equipe com a qual me vejo jogando. Ter uma boa organização para alunos-atletas."

"I am looking for an academically good college. A good group of athletes and coaches with a team I can see myself playing with. Have a good organization for student-athletes."

Quais são as suas expectativas para o seu ano jogando como uma Junior/What are your expectations heading into junior year?

"Eu estou muito ansiosa para meu ano jogando como uma junior. Eu tenho grandes expectativas para esta temporada que está vindo. Eu espero que o nosso time tenho grandes resultados durante a temporada e grande torneios."

"I'm really looking forward to my year playing as a junior. I have high expectations for this upcoming season. I hope our team has great results during the season and big tournaments."
