RECIFE, PERNAMBUCO -- Sara Dagba is a 180cm Combo Guard from Brasil. Ela está no segundo ano do Colégio Santa Emilia e joga pela Associação Adrianinha de Basquete na Federação Pernambucana de Basquete. Dagba is one of the bright young stars in Brasil, who I was recommended to by RPN athletes, Sofia Dantas and Antônia Cavalcanti.

After a well put together three year run, the RPN's high school basketball chapter is officially closing, and I couldn't help but to invite Dagba as my last addition. The 5-foot-11 wing é uma jogadora versátil com alto QI em sua armação, athleticism, defensora sólida e pontua bem em todos os três níveis. Sua experiência no basquete a separou do grupo, já que ela é membro do sistema de seleção juvenil do Brasil e recentemente participou da NBA Academy em Atlanta (Geórgia) no fim de semana passado. Tive a sorte de trabalhar com muitos atletas talentosos desde meu primeiro ano de faculdade, mas Dagba estende o poder dentro da classe de 2026. Dagba is currently on the search for opportunities in America, but to any coach that lands her, you are getting a gem.

But, before I transition into Dagba's interview, here is a quick message:

Thank you to every figure who has been a part of this basketball journey. From my first morning of web designing to becoming one of the more recognizable platforms, you guys are the ones who have made my vision come alive, and I can't thank you enough. Shoutout to my current and former players, partners, influences, international group, and more for all your contributions. You have established a strong meaning to those three letters, while also creating your own brand at the end of the day. This is not a goodbye, but I will be taking a step back to focus on work in other areas.

Without further ado, I caught up with the international prospect in an interview on life growing up in Brasil, and an in-depth look into the Brasileiro basketball scene.

Quando você começou a jogar basquete/When did you first start playing basketball?

"Comecei a jogar basquete aos 9 anos. Eu e minha família estávamos passeando no shopping quando uma grande jogadora de basquete, Adriana Mafra, nos parou. Somos uma família muito alta, e ela perguntou se gostaríamos de jogar basquete em seu time. Então lá fomos nós. No começo, não gostei muito porque era uma criança muito agitada," continuou Dagba."Era difícil ficar parada. Então parei de jogar basquete por 8 meses. Minha irmã mais velha continuou e eu sempre a observava treinar e jogar. Então, um dia houve uma festa e eu estava me divertindo muito jogando basquete. Lembro que me apaixonei pelo basquete lá."

"I started playing basketball when I was 9 years old. My family and I were walking in the mall when a great basketball player, Adriana Mafra, stopped us. We are a very tall family, and she asked if we would like to play basketball on her team. So off we went. "At first I didn't like it very much because I was a very restless child," Dagba continued. "It was hard to sit still. So I stopped playing basketball for 8 months. My older sister wouldn't stop and I would always watch her practice and play. Then one day there was a party and I was having so much fun playing basketball. I remember falling in love there."

Como você descreveria suas habilidades de jogo/Describe your game from the skill standpoint.

"Eu gosto de defender, usar meus movimentos 1x1, e atirar de perto, e de longa distância. Também tenho uma visão de jogo porque gosto de fazer passes, além de buscar bloqueios e rebotes."

"I like to defend, use my one-one-one moves, and shoot up close and long range. I also have a vision of the game because I like to make passes, in addition to looking for blocks and rebounds."

Como foi a sua vida crescendo no Brasil/How was life growing up in Brazil?

"O Brasil é um lugar muito divertido. As pessoas estão sempre animadas. Muito legal com as rivalidades, e a vontade de cada time de ganhar os campeonatos. Competições que são muito competitivas, mas que nunca deixamos de nos divertir, e fazer o que gostamos. Morei fora do Brasil no Senegal por alguns anos quando era muito jovem, e foi difícil para mim me adaptar ao Brasil quando cheguei. Língua, cultura e pessoas diferentes. Mas, eu amo e sempre terei amor por este país!"

"Brazil is a very fun place. People are always excited. Very cool with the rivalries, and the desire of each team to win championships. Competitions that are very competitive, but that we never stop having fun, and doing what we like. I lived outside Brazil in Senegal for a few years when I was very young, and it was difficult for me to adapt to Brazil when I arrived. Different language, culture and people. But, I love and will always have love for this country!"

Sendo um jogador de basquete brasileiro, é muito raro. Em um país dominado pelo futebol, os jogadores tendem a ser negligenciados. Na sua experiência, o que significa para você ser um hooper brasileiro e o chip que você tem no ombro/Being a Brazilian basketball player, it is very rare. In a country dominated by football, players tend to be neglected. In your experience, what does it mean for you to be a Brazilian hooper and the chip you have on your shoulder?

"Todos nós amamos futebol aqui, pois somos conhecidos como o país do futebol. Um esporte que é bem idolatrado aqui. O futebol é uma grande parte da nossa cultura e as crianças desde tenra idade querem seguir o caminho do futebol. E, às vezes, não valorizam o resto dos esportes. Não estou generalizando, tem vários brasileiros que valorizam. É muito difícil ter grande reconhecimento pelo basquete e outros esportes. Jogar no Brasil é ótimo. Temos campeonatos com muita rivalidade, pessoas talentosas e treinando com frequência. Mas, é muito difícil ser um jogador com grande visibilidade no Brasil. O basquete no Brasil merece mais interessados."

"We all love football here as we are known as a football country. A sport that is well idolized here. Football is a big part of our culture, and kids from a young age want to follow the path of football. And, sometimes they don't value the rest of sports. I'm not generalizing, there are several Brazilians who value it. It's just very difficult to have great recognition for basketball and other sports. Playing in Brazil is great. We have championships with great rivalry, talented people, and training frequently. But, it's very difficult to be a player with high visibility in Brazil. Basketball in Brazil deserves more people interested."

How has your year been?

"Este ano está cheio de novas experiências. Tem sido incrível. Não teve muitos campeonatos pelo meu time, por que vai acontecer durante o ano.Fomos campeões estaduais por Pernambuco, e eu fiz parte da seleção brasileira no México. Não nos classificamos e joguei um pouco, mas foi outra experiência muito boa. Acabei de ir aos jogos da NBA Academy no fim de semana passado. Os jogos e treinos são diferentes com a intensidade dos jogos em relação ao Brasil. Agora estamos nos preparando para as competições do próximo ano."

"This year is full of new experiences. It's been amazing. I haven't had many championships for my team because it's about to happen next year. We were the state champions for Pernambuco, and I was a part of the Brazilian team in Mexico. We didn't qualify, and I didn't play much, but it was another very nice experience. I just went to the NBA Academy games this past weekend. The games and training are different with the intensity of games compared to brazil. Now we are preparing for the competitions next year."

Você ainda está em um estágio muito inicial de sua carreira. Que tipo de coisas você está fazendo para se tornar a melhor jogadora que você pode ser/You’re still at a very early stage of your career. What kinds of things are you doing to make yourself the best player you can be?

"Além de treinar para a escola e meu clube, treino com o técnico Terriel Thomas em coisas extras, para chegar ao nível que desejo. Treino coisas que preciso melhorar para chegar na intensidade das meninas nos EUA. Eu assisto muitos jogos como o NCAA e WNBA. Para obter uma referência. Gosto de observar as mulheres na minha posição para usar os movimentos no jogo e nos treinos."

"Besides training for school and my club, I train with Coach Terriel Thomas on extra things, so I can reach the level I want. I train things that I need to improve to reach the intensity of girls in the USA. I watch many games like the NCAA and WNBA. To get a reference. I like to observe women in my position to use the moves in the game, and in training."

Quem é o seu jogador preferido e porque/Who’s your favorite basketball player and why?

"Eu realmente gosto de Jayson Tatum. Adoro vê-lo jogar, como ele joga tão duro e sempre querendo ser o melhor que pode ser. Ele me inspira pela sua caminhada, pelas dificuldades que superou e por chegar onde chegou."

"I really like Jayson Tatum. I love watching him play, how he plays so hard, and always wanting to be the best he can be. He exhales me for his walk of life, difficult things he overcame, and to reach where he arrived."

Quem você considera seus modelos/Who would you consider your role models?

"Minha mãe, irmãs e pai. Eu sempre quero deixá-los orgulhosos e honrar tudo o que eles fizeram por mim durante a minha vida."

"My mother, sisters, and father. I always want to make them proud, and honor everything they've done for me during my life."

Ao longo do nosso processo, você me disse que seria um sonho jogar nos Estados Unidos. Se uma oportunidade fosse apresentada a você, o que isso significaria para você e sua família/Throughout our process, you told me it would be a dream to play in the United States. If an opportunity would be presented to you, what would that mean to you and your family?

"Ficarei muito feliz e agradecido. Sonho em ser um grande jogador, e isso seria muito importante para a minha jornada. Sonho há muitos anos em ter essa oportunidade. Minha família apóia muito meu desejo de jogar nos Estados Unidos e sempre estarei pronto quando minha chance chegar."

"I would be very happy and grateful. I dream of being a great player, and that would be very important for my journey. I have dreamed of having this opportunity for many years. My family is very supportive of my desire to play in the USA, and I'll always be ready when my chance comes."
